Greenhouse Gases (GHGs)

Emissions that trap heat in the atmosphere, causing global warming. The main greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide (CO2), Methane (CH4), Nitrous Oxide (N2O), and fluorinated gases (synthetic greenhouse gases emitted from industrial processes, including hydrofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons, and surfur hexafluoride).[1] The Climate Registry draft update to its GHG reporting protocol now also includes NF3 (nitrogen trifluoride)

Carbon Content Coefficient (Combusted Fossil Fuels)

The estimated carbon content of combusted fossil fuels representing the maximum potential emissions to the atmosphere if all carbon in the fuel were to be oxidized during combustion.  [Source: Annex 2 Methodology and Data for Estimating CO2 Emissions from Fossil Fuel Combustion, Inventory of U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sinks: 1990-2010, 2012; U.S. Environmental Protection Agency;
